Railroad Quiet Zone To Be Enacted Near Puetz Road Crossing

Residents in the area have pushed for years for the quiet zone, which will be implemented as part of a road construction project.

Residents living near the Puetz Road railroad crossing in Oak Creek will soon get a long-awaited wish: a quiet zone.

The city is making improvements on Puetz Road this summer that will allow a quiet (or "no-whistle") zone to be implemented.

The sounding of a train horn is a railroad safety requirement that coincides with safety gates and lights activating at at-grade crossings. But communities can implement certain measures to allow for a quiet zone—in Oak Creek's case, it is is constructing a raised median, City Engineer Mike Simmons said.

The improvements are part of a rehabilitation of Puetz between Howell Avenue and Liberty Lane. A construction start date has not yet been set, but the contract stipulates work must be done before school starts Sept. 3, Simmons said.

The Oak Creek Common Council last week approved a $376,030 contract with Payne & Dolan for the work.
