Walker Tops Oak Creek Vote in Recall Primary

Tuesday's historic gubernatorial primary was held mostly to determine the Democratic opponent to Gov. Scott Walker in this summer's recall election.

Nevertheless, Walker easily emerged as the top vote-getter in Republican-leaning Oak Creek.

Walker pulled in 3,989 votes in Oak Creek, according to unofficial results from the city clerk's office. That's more than the 2,114 ballots cast for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and 896 for former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk.

Overall, Walker got 55 percent of the 7,194 votes cast for governor in Oak Creek.

Two other Democratic candidates, Kathleen Vinehout and Doug La Follette, got 73 votes and 61 votes, respectively.

Oak Creek voter turnout was 37 percent.

Walker will face Barrett in a rematch of the 2010 election after .

In the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor, meanwhile, Mahlon Mitchell got 1,729 votes (41.5 percent) in Oak Creek, beating Isaac Weix, who had 1,339 (32 percent). Ira Robins got 994 votes (24 percent).

There was no Republican primary for lieutenant governor on Tuesday's ballot. Mitchell, a Madison firefighter and union leader, will face incumbent Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch in the June 5 recall election.

The only significant problem reported was people who "over-voted," meaning they voted for a gubernatorial candidate in each party. Voters were only allowed to vote in one party's primary.

The problem was easily fixed -- the machine picks up the error, and people were given a new ballot.

Over-voting didn't just happen in Oak Creek, either. It was .
