Elementary School's New Mural a Team Effort

Students at all grade levels got involved in creating a new mural for the front hallway of Edgewood Elementary.

That masterpiece of a mural greeting students and staff of Edgewood Elementary was a team effort—and environmentally-friendly to boot.

Art teacher Wendy Bagatta said the school got all grade levels involved in the project: Second grade students painted the backgrounds on each of the design panel pieces; third graders contributed drawings for the final mural design; fourth grade students did the mosaic patterns and attached recycled caps to the design panels; and fifth grade students are developing a slogan for the mural.

Kindergarten and first graders, meanwhile, sorted the caps that students brought into the art room throughout the year. Now, those caps are on display in a unique way in the front foyer of the school.

The Oak Creek High School Environmental Club and National Art Honor Society got in on the action, as well. They worked with the fourth graders on their portion of the project, and in the process were able to add the project to their own portfolios.

The school's work kicked into high gear in late April in celebration of Earth Day, and is expected to be completed this week in time for the school's spring concert.
