Nurses Urge Back-To-School Vaccinations

Immunizations sometimes fall by the wayside in back-to-school planning.

The Wisconsin Association of School Nurses is reminding families to have their children vaccinated before they go back to school.

Wisconsin law requires children in 5-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade be immunized within 30 days after school starts. Otherwise, the child could be excluded from school for five days, or the parent fined.

"Many parents find themselves in full 'back-to-school' mode at this time of year and are already starting to gather all the necessary back-to-school supplies. However, they should also include on those lists the need for current and updated vaccinations for their children," said Ann Riojas, WASN president and Milwaukee Public Schools nursing supervisor.

The WASN recommends parents check the Wisconsin Immunization Registry to view their child's vaccination record, phone their family physician to make sure the immunizations are up-to-date, and talk with their school during registration.

School starts in Oak Creek on Sept. 1.
