OCHS Pool Work Will Force Swim Teams Away From Home

A discovery of clogged pipes will shut down the Oak Creek High School pool until the end of September.

A discovery during work on the Oak Creek High School pool will shut down the facility until the end of September.

Work has been ongoing this summer to raise the pool's water level. During construction, the project manager found the pool's main inlet pipe and most of the smaller inlet pipes are plugged with steel corrosion and trapped debris, Superintendent Sara Burmeister said.

As a result, the district will spend about $157,000 for additional work to replace those pipes. The money will come from the district's community service fund, which includes only fees and no property tax dollars.

The original cost of the project was about $200,000

The work was previously scheduled to be completed in August. The delay will prevent Oak Creek swim teams from practicing at their home pool and hosting meets during the first part of the season.

The school is working with Franklin and South Milwaukee to share pools for practice and meets, Burmeister said.

The girls' swim team season begins in August and continues through November.
