School Board Bumps Pay For Superintendent

Board members said they wanted the pay increase to be consistent with those given to teachers.

The Oak Creek-Franklin School Board has approved a 3.5 percent salary increase for Superintendent Sara Burmeister.

The board discussed several options but wanted to keep the salary increase in line with what teachers will get when their next contract is finalized, School Board President Frank Carini said.

School Board member Paul Mason wanted an even larger increase, saying Burmeister is under-paid compared to other superintendents in the area.

"Quite frankly, we discussed things closer to 6 percent just to even get her (salary) to be more competitive," Mason said. "But because we were also trying to keep this somewhat consistent with how we're paying teachers, we're making what I'll say is a low-ball (offer)."

The board approved the pay increase on a 3-2 vote, with Kathleen Borchardt and Sheryl Cerniglia opposed.

According to state Department of Public Instruction statistics, Burmeister's salary was $158,870 in the 2012-13 school year. The 3.5 percent increase brings her salary up to $164,430.

A check of other superintendents in the area shows Franklin Superintendent Steve Patz made $164,208 in 2012-13; Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner, $143,386; Greendale Superintendent John Tharp, $155,000; Muskego-Norway Superintendent Kelly Thompson, $158,500; and New Berlin Superintendent Joe Garza, $155,232.
