Teacher Retirements Up Throughout State

Fewer teachers greeted students on their first day of school today.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the number of teacher retirements in Wisconsin doubled compared to each of the previous two years.

As I wrote last month, the was no exception to the exodus of employees leaving in the face of major changes passed by the state Legislature. from the school district, much higher than a typical year.

In Oak Creek, most of those positions were not filled as a cost-saving measure (about $478,000 was saved). That helped offset a budget deficit and keep the property tax levy status quo, but it also meant fewer teachers in school this year.
