Verhalen Sworn-In As New Oak Creek-Franklin School Board Member

Recent election winner praises Cerniglia's service on the board.

Mark Verhalen was sworn in to the Oak Creek-Franklin School Board on Monday, just six days after winning a tight election over incumbent Sheryl Cerniglia.

Verhalen starts his term on April 25. The swearing-in was held Monday because the full School Board will not meet again until May.

Verhalen won by just 30 votes Tuesday, beating Cerniglia, a nine-year veteran of the School Board.

The incoming board member had high praise for Cerniglia, saying it was a "privilege" to take over her seat.

"It was really hard to run against somebody who's been on the board for so long," he said. "My wife and kids even didn't think I had a chance, to tell you the truth."

"I really appreciate the service you've done for this city," Verhalen said, speaking to Cerniglia, "and hopefully I can fill your shoes."

Earlier Monday, Cerniglia said she had considered asking for a recount but was highly unlikely to do so. After speaking with many experts, as well as the city clerks in Franklin and Oak Creek, she determined it was highly unlikely the end result would change, she said.

The School Board will formally recognize Cerniglia's service with a certificate of appreciation next week.
