Conference Meet a Tough Day for Oak Creek Wrestlers

Knights take fifth at conference tournament

The Southeast Conference has some dominant teams when it comes to wrestling. For anyone outside of Franklin, Muskego andKenosha Tremper, it can be difficult to go up against kids from those schools.

That was the case for Oak Creek Saturday at the SEC conference tournament as the Knights finished fifth after a frustrating day on the mats.

“We didn’t do too good today, to be honest,” Oak Creek Head Coach Matt Sommerville said. “A couple guys got into some matches and just didn’t get it done. We’ve got some injuries now and a lot of guys don’t like coming to the conference tournament because of these injuries, and it doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot unless you’re the team winning it.

"Regionals coming up next week is going to be a tough test for those guys.”

While it might not have been the best of days for Oak Creek, it still had a few wrestlers in the top five.

Jake Schmidt (119 pounds) and Alex Ferriera (125) both finished fifth. Joey Swick (103), Randy Maas (160), and Mike Heard (285) all took fourth. Bryce Agg (189) took third while Josh Regazzi (171) was the brightest spot for the Knights, losing in the championship match in a close, 5-0 decision.

While being in a conference with three wrestling machines can be difficult, Sommerville said his team views it as an opportunity to get better.

“We’ve been in a conference with Muskego, Tremper and Franklin for a real long time,” Sommerville said. “We know who these guys are; we see them all the time. They’re very good but our guys have hung in there before with them. We’ve come close to winning in the past. Right now it’s their time, hopefully in the future it’ll be our time.”

The Knights now prepare for regionals, which they will host Saturday.
