Updated: Knights Begin Tourney With Win

Oak Creek will face South Milwaukee on Friday.

Oak Creek's pursuit of a state baseball title got off to a good start Tuesday night as the Knights shut out St. Francis 8-0 at .

The one-seeded Knights advanced to take on South Milwaukee, which beat Greendale. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at South Milwaukee.

Should the Knights win Friday morning, they would play at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of Franklin-Greenfield.

That means the possibility of a rubber match with the defending state champion Sabers. Oak Creek and Franklin, generally regarded as two of the best teams in the state, split during the regular season. If they meet Friday, the winner would go on to play in the state finals in Stevens Point.

Oak Creek last won a state championship in 2005, the final of three consecutive titles.

This year would seem to mark as good a chance as any to take home another. Oak Creek was the champion of the Greater Metro Conference, finishing with a 25-4 overall record. The season was also marked by a .

Three players on the Knights were named to the all-conference first team: Pitcher Chris Bournelis and outfielders Joey Gribble and Ryan Ungerecht. Coach Scott Holler was named coach of the year.
