Knights Face Tall Order in State Tournament

Tenth-seeded Knights look to play the Cindarella role.

Oak Creek Knights head basketball coach Mike Jossie knew his first season at Oak Creek would be challenging.

The young team had the challenge of coming together with little to no varsity experience while competing in one of the tougher conferences in the state.

The challenges don’t stop now.

Oak Creek is seeded tenth in their half of the Div. 1 Al McGuire Center Sectional, which features some of the top teams in the state.

The Knights open up tournament action Tuesday at Racine Park in a regional semifinal matchup. The teams have played each other twice this year, with each team winning at home.

Terrence Gardner leads the Oak Creek offensive attack, averaging 11.6 points per game. The sophomore had two strong performances against Racine Park this season, scoring 15 points in each game, and he hopes to repeat those performances to advance the Knights to the regional final.

Junior Casey Magyar has also performed well for the Knights. His three-point shooting will be a key if Oak Creek looks to make a run in the state tournament. For the season, Magyar has averaged 8.6 points per game and has hit 1.5 three-pointers per game.

Waiting for the winner of Oak Creek vs. Racine Park is Milwaukee Hamilton. The City Conference power finished the season third behind only Riverside and King, both ranked in the state’s top ten.

The rest of the seeds for Oak Creek’s half of the sectional are:

  • No. 1 Racine Case (20-2 overall, 13-1 Southeast Conference)
  • No. 2 Milwaukee Hamilton (16-6, 10-3 Milwaukee City Conference)
  • No. 3 Milwaukee South (15-7, 8-5 Milwaukee City Conference)
  • No. 4 Milwaukee Pulaski/Arts (14-8, 9-4 Milwaukee City Conference)
  • No. 5 South Milwaukee (15-7, 12-5 Woodland Conference Black Division)
  • No. 6 Racine Horlick (9-13, 7-7 Southeast Conference)
  • No. 7 Racine Park (9-11, 6-8 Southeast Conference)
  • No. 8 Milwaukee Bay View (6-16, 6-7 Milwaukee City Conference)
  • No. 9 Milwaukee Bradley Tech (11-11, 6-7 Milwaukee City Conference
  • No. 10 Oak Creek (6-16, 2-12 Southeast Conference)

The potential matchup of Milwaukee Hamilton and No.1-seeded Racine Case has many high school basketball fans throughout the state excited. Both teams feature a number of Div. I college basketball prospects, and a sectional final matchup between the two would be a great showcase.

That is, unless Oak Creek has anything to say about it.
