Relay Race Will Bring Thousands of Runners Through Oak Creek

More than 4,500 runners will participate in the Ragnar Relay Series June 7-8. The race starts in Madison Friday morning and finishes in Chicago on Saturday.

More than 4,500 runners will pass through Oak Creek on June 7 and 8 as part of the Ragnar Relay Series.

The 200-mile overnight relay begins in Madison early Friday morning and ends at Lincoln Park in Chicago on Saturday.

Officials anticipate teams will enter Oak Creek—on Drexel Avenue—about 9:30 p.m. They will make their way to an exchange at Oak Creek High School and then to another exchange at Parkway Apostolic Church, 10940 S. Nicholson Road, before continuing south.

The last runners are expected to leave Oak Creek by 7:30 a.m. Saturday. According to the city, participants are required to wear reflective vests, headlamps and LED lights during the nighttime hours, obey all traffic laws and stay with the normal flow of pedestrian traffic.

More than 400 teams are expected to participate in the race. One person from each team runs at a time, with the rest riding in vans. The race benefits local charities.

The runners come from 42 states, Canada and France. Many will be in costumes with decorated vans to create their own Ragnar experience, according to a Ragnar press release.

Since two college roommates began Ragnar in 2004 as a single relay in Utah, it has grown to 21 races with more than 200,000 participants.
