National Night Out Will Take On 'More Somber Tone' As Sun Sets

Organizers have made changes to the community public safety event to recognize the victims of shooting at Sikh temple in Oak Creek.

While it would have been fun to look forward to fireworks at the Oak Creek on Tuesday night, after , it just didn't seem like the right thing to do, said organizers.

"We have decided to cancel Tuesday night's fireworks, as we felt it wouldn't have been appropriate," said Kim Bogadi, chairperson for the event.

Designed to bring the community out to meet up with various law enforcement and safety groups, National Night Out will take on an even more poignant role at the .

"We will be transitioning after 8 p.m. to more of a somber tone to the event," Bogadi explained. "We will feature the singing of the National Anthem as we always have, but the mayor and other officials will talk to the crowd at around 8:30 p.m., and from there, we will have a procession to "

Bogadi said organizers had been hearing from various groups that "busloads" of people are planning on attending the vigil, and the decision was made to move the vigil to an alternate site.

"We will have the Sikh priests and temple leaders begin the flashlight walk to Miller Park, and the vigil will take place there," she said.

Walgreens has also donated 1,800 candles to the event for people who don't bring their own to the vigil, according to Bogadi.

"I think it's all they had in the store," she said, adding that the gesture was an illustration of overall community response.

"This has been such a wonderful event, to see the community coming together and uniting," she said.
