Series of Temple Shooting Anniversary Events Starts Friday

Events marking the 1-year anniversary of the Sikh temple shooting stretch over four days beginning Friday.

Events marking the 1-year anniversary of the Sikh temple shooting in Oak Creek are set to begin Friday and continue into Monday. 

Ceremonies start at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the temple, 7512 S. Howell Ave., with Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour recitation of Sikh holy scriptures, Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

At 1:30 p.m., a remembrance will be held at the federal courthouse in Milwaukee, 517 E. Wisconsin Ave. 

The ceremony will feature remarks from U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Attorney James Santelle, Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi and representatives from Sikh temples in Oak Creek and Brookfield. 

An informal community gathering will be held afterward, "during which participants and attendees will have an opportunity to engage in informal discussion and share thoughts," according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office. 

Also ahead this weekend:

A 6K memorial run/walk called Chardhi Kala will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Creek High School. On-site registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and speakers will take the podium at 9:30 a.m. Food and games will follow. 

The Akhand Path will conclude about 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the temple. Hymns will be sung at 11 a.m., with tributes to those killed on Aug. 5, 2012 to follow and conclude at 3 p.m.

On Monday, the temple will hold a contemplative meditation from 6 to 8 p.m. The ceremonies will conclude with a community candlelight vigil at 8 p.m.
