Bill Folk Enters the Race for Wisconsin Secretary of State

RACINE – On Tuesday afternoon, Bill Folk (R-Racine) announced that he would seek the Republican nomination for Wisconsin Secretary of State.

In a written statement, Folk promises that he would re-establish the previous functions of the Wisconsin Secretary of State before current officeholder Doug LaFollette was first elected over 40 years ago. He said that he would restore the Secretary of State to be the state’s chief elections officer, handle business licensing, registering trademarks, and to re-administer the state seal used in notaries.

Folk said: “When I’m elected next November I will work with the legislature and the Governor to re-establish the functions that the Secretary of State had prior to La Follete’s 40 year tenure. This will provide the voters of Wisconsin with an elected, accountable officeholder that has significant objectives. “

Two other Republican candidates have entered the race for Secretary of State. Those include mortgage Executive Jay Schroeder (R-Neenah) and former Waupun Councilman Rohn Bishop (R-Waupun). Both Bishop and Schroeder differ from Folk on how the future of the Office of Secretary of State. Bishop promises to merge Secretary of State with the State Treasurer or eliminate it completely. Jay Schoreder said that he would fully eliminate the office and put the measure to a statewide referendum.

In response to Folk’s candidacy, Jay Schroeder said: “My opponent’s plan of restoring the Office of Secretary of State is no different than Doug La Follette’s.” Rohn Bishop called Folk’s plan to restore the Office of Secretary of State “not realistic” and said that “no other Governors or Legislators have complained about giving the Secretary of State more to do.”
