Oak Creek Begins Quest For Repeat

Less than a year removed from a state title, the Knights baseball team enters the season with high expectations—and got things started with a 12-0 win.

The Oak Creek Knights' baseball team took one look back at the state championship-winning 2012 season before starting the 2013 campaign. If Opening Night was any indication, more success should be in store for this year's squad. After unveiling the state championship banner in right-center field, the Knights got the bats out and pounded Wauwatosa East 12-0 Friday night at Abendschein Park. No. 9 hitter Mitchel Makarewicz led the way with two home runs and five RBIs. Sophomore Hayden Krimmer also hit a home run and pitched a two-hit shutout in a game that was called for the 10-run rule after the top of the 5th inning. "Usually the pitching and defense is ahead of the offense at this time of year, so it was nice to come out and score 12 runs…

A man had a child in his car when he was arrested for his fourth drunken-driving offense May 13 in Oak Creek, according to a police report. The child was picked up by her mother while the man was taken to Wheaton Franciscan for a blood draw.

Ryan Interchange Reconstruction Expected to Be Delayed Until 2015

To close a shortfall in Wisconsin's transportation fund, state lawmakers recommend delaying large highway projects in the Milwaukee area.

To help close a shortfall in Wisconsin's transportation fund, state lawmakers recommended Thursday to delay work on large highway projects in the Milwaukee area, including construction on the Ryan Road Interchange, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Reconstruction of the interchange had been scheduled for next year as part of the state Department of Transportation's massive Interstate 94 north-south widening project — which includes the highway between the airport and Illinois border. Delaying the work would defer $19 million in state spending, the Journal reports. In all, $59.5 million in highway projects would be delayed, until 2015 at least, to help bridge a $63.4 million gap in the state transportation fund. Meanwhile, …

Drive Safe This Memorial Day, Here's Where The Problem Areas Are

While the DOT is suspending work for the Memorial Day weekend, there are a number of construction areas that could muck up your travel plans if you don't slow down.

As many travelers head out of town for the three-day Memorial Day weekend, there’s still plenty of construction that might add frustration to your travel plans. So slow down and drive safely. If you don’t, there might be a hefty fine or a car crash in your future. More than 400 law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin will be out in force during the holiday weekend to crackdown on unbuckled drivers and passengers as part of the "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, which runs until June 2, according to the DOT.  Highway construction in most work zones will be suspended at noon today and won’t resume until 6 a.m. Tuesday. "While most lanes through work zones will be open to handle the heavy holiday traffic, drivers may still encounter …

Milwaukee-Area Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about 11 months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009, when it was four months. Veterans working with the Milwaukee VA center are faring better than their counterparts nationwide. The average wait …

As Scott Walker Appears to be Testing Waters, ‘Truth Squad’ Debunks ‘Pants on Fire’ Claims

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker could appeal to both social and fiscal conservatives, making him a candidate to "fear" in the Iowa Caucuses, progressives warn.

West Des Moines, Iowa — Amid growing speculation that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is testing GOP presidential waters in Iowa and elsewhere, progressive activists warned Thursday at a rally here that a Walker presidency would be “terrifying" and disastrous to middle-class families. Walker hasn’t said he’s a candidate, but his appearance Thursday at a Republican fundraiser in Iowa’s largest county, as well as a handful of appearances in the Northeast and before powerful conservative groups, suggest that he’s at least considering a 2016 run for the Republican presidential nomination. The “Scott Walker Truth Squad,” as activists from Progress Iowa and One Wisconsin Now call themselves, told reporters at a news conference that Walker has the …

Sheriff David Clarke Puts Holiday Drivers on Alert

Extra officers will be on every highway and street all weekend, says Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, and municipal police back that up.

The highways and byways of Milwaukee County will be crowded with traffic this long holiday weekend, and Sheriff David Clarke wants all drivers, those law-abiding and those not, to know law officers will be on the road with them – in numbers. With responsibilty for freeways, highways and parks, sheriff's deputies will be on heavy, highly visible patrol, Clarke said, along with local police and the State Patrol. "Memorial Day weekend represents the start of the summer driving season, when highway travel increases dramatically," Clarke said at a press conference Thursday. County deputies would be out of their jurisdiction staking out taverns, but I can assure you that some police departments do just exactly that. In Wauwatosa, after police starting camping outside Mo's Irish Pub, 10842 Blue Mound Rd., Mo's owner Johnny Vassallo did the right thing and entered into a partnership with Tosa Police and the High-Visibility Multi-Jursidictional OWI Task Force to reduce …   more ›

Revealed: Community Center Summer Concert Series Lineup

The Oak Creek Community Center is celebrating its 10th year of providing free live music in its summer concert series.

Last month, the Oak Creek Community Center asked Patch to help solicit public input on bands that should be included in the 10th anniversary of the summer concert series. Hoo boy, did readers ever respond. More than 115 comments—and counting—have been posted to that story. And that doesn't include the numerous emails I've received or comments on the Oak Creek Patch Facebook page. The community center was impressed by the feedback and, based on that input, tried to get Oak Creek resident Eric Diamond and the Ultimate Legends Band to perform this summer. Unfortunately, the group was not available because of prior commitments, Community Center Director Rich Duchniak said. Also unfortunately, for yours truly, Pearl Jam did not make the cut. I …

Could You Be The Next Cheesehead Snooki Or Pauly D?

Hollywood wants to capture Wisconsin's deep abiding affection for the Green Bay Packers and they are going to make a reality show about cheeseheads.

Move over Jersey Shore, the "cheeseheads" are taking over reality television via TBS's new reality show called...well, Cheeseheads, according to SBNation.com. Hollywood has just figured out what we alreday knew -- that Snookie and Pauly D have nothing on us. The producers hope to capture "the hilarious subculture," which of course includes the rituals of brew, brats, and the brouhaha around extreme fandom. The producer is Jason Carbone, who who also did The Bachelor and Run's House. A pilot likely hasn't been put together. So, if you could produce this show, where would you find shining examples of Packers Nation?
