College Ave. Work Could Be Over Soon

Lane closures have persisted in the year since College Avenue reopened, frustrating drivers.

If you've driven College Avenue between Howell and Pennsylvania avenues, you have probably noticed that the orange construction barrels never really went away after the street reopened last year. Work has continued in the westbound lanes near the tunnel to install street lighting. That has caused lane closures and congestion, particularly during rush hour. County Supervisor Pat Jursik said in her monthly newsletter that street lighting was added to the original reconstruction project, but late delivery of equipment delayed some of the work. The hope is that all street lighting work is completed before the end of the year, weather permitting. "My constituents and I have been frustrated at the stalled progress and lane closure," she wrote. "…

Local Officials Will Celebrate College Ave. Reopening

Ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday.

College Avenue between Pennsylvania and Howell avenues will officially reopen Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring County Executive Chris Abele and others. The road has been closed since last spring as crews transform the street into a four-lane boulevard that will include a roundabout and sidewalks, among other features. The ribbon-cutting, which will also be attended by County Supervisor Pat Jursik and other public officials, will be held at 11 a.m. Afterward, the public is invited to a reception at the MKE Regional Business Park, on the site of the former 440th Air Reserve Station at 300 E. Postal Service May Get Extension For Mail-Processing Center

Plan for roundabout would also be moved up to this year, under plan.

The deadline to begin construction on a mail-processing center at the corner of Pennsylvania and College would be extended two years under a proposed memorandum of understanding. Under the terms of an ordinance approved in 2008, the United States Postal Service has to start construction on public and private improvements by Dec. 8, 2011. But with the USPS suffering huge financial losses and possibly closing post offices across the country, that deadline won't be met. According to a report to council members, the USPS has ceased all capital expenditures for new construction projects throughout the country.  The Oak Creek Common Council on Tuesday will discuss a proposal to move the start date to Dec. 8, 2013.
