City Rejects Business' Composting Plans

Mayor Steve Scaffidi broke a 3-3 tie to prevent Green Man from beginning composting operations at its facility on Nicholson Road.

After criticism from residents and some aldermen, Mayor Steve Scaffidi cast a tie-breaking vote to reject Green Man Wood Services' plans to operate a state-licensed composting facility. Green Man, 9000 S. Nicholson Road, has been the topic of much debate among its neighbors in the last year after owner Dan Gustin first tried starting composting operations back in November of 2011. The Common Council delayed action to allow Gustin to sort out issues brought up by neighbors. Much of the residents' concerns stemmed from how composting, specifically the smell from the materials brought in, would negatively affect the neighborhood. Those concerns have not died down. Residents complained Tuesday about foul odors in the area they believe came …

Discussion on Selling City Hall Property Begins

Conversations were in closed session but city officials vow public will have their say.

For a few months now, city leaders have floated the idea of constructing a "city center" at the site of the old Delphi land, 7929 S. Howell Ave.  The site would include a new City Hall and public library, and it would mean the sale of 8640 S. Howell Ave., where those buildings now stand. A sale of that property could pave the way for an expansion of Oak Creek High School, 340 E. Puetz Road. For the first time, the Common Council in its Dec. 21 meeting formally discussed selling the City Hall and library land and acquiring the Delphi property. They also discussed acquiring several other properties, including land near the lakefront and land for the new Drexel Interchange. However, the meeting was held in closed session. Under the state's …

We elect alder people to be the guardian of the tax payers money and to look out for are interest ,but they seem to …   more ›

Some Businesses Could See Big Fee Hikes

Increases would bring Oak Creek in line with state, but some aldermen say the jumps are too much.

Some businesses would see fee hikes as big as 400 percent under a proposal to the Oak Creek Common Council. Health Department officials and some others in city government say some fees charged to businesses are the lowest in the surrounding area and need to be brought up, in part to help cover costs.  The fees in question are for annual licenses, pre-inspection and re-inspection. Businesses affected would be restaurants, lodging, campgrounds, recreational, tattoo/body-piercing and retail food establishments. The increases would mean at least $15,000 in new revenue, according to a report to council members. In bringing those up to a higher level, however, it could also mean extremely high percentage increases compared to the prior …

Only One Challenger So Far In Council Races

The filing period for municipal races ends Jan. 4.

With just a week to go until the filing period ends, two incumbents could have an easy ride to re-election. No challengers have emerged for Aldermen Steve Scaffidi and Ken Gehl, who are up for re-election in the 3rd District and 5th District, respectively. Scaffidi has completed all the necessary paperwork for re-election; Gehl has taken out papers, but has not filed. One incumbent may face a challenge. Kathryn Michuda has taken out papers to run against incumbent 1st District Alderman Daniel Jakubczyk, who has also taken out paperwork. Neither has filed. Residents interested in running for public office have until 5 p.m. on Jan. 4 to submit paperwork to the City Clerk's office in City Hall, 8640 S. Howell Ave.  Aldermanic candidates are…
