One Oak Creek ice skating rink has opened while another could open by the weekend.
The zero-degree weather that has settled in this week isn't all bad, particularly if you like ice skating. The rink at Chapel Hills Park, 6735 S. Highfield Drive, is now open and the Henry Miller Park pond could open by the weekend, officials said on the city's Facebook page. Due to the mild temperatures, the Oak Creek Recreation Department posted signs at Henry Miller Park at the beginning of the month warning people against ice skating (not that it stopped some brave Oak Creek High School students from trying their luck). The city is hoping to open the pond up by the weekend, weather permitting. For the latest information, call the recreation activity line at (414) 299-9721 and press 1, or keep tabs on the Oak Creek Recreation Facebook …

Some are apparently willing to test their luck, however.
The mild winter temperatures prompted the Oak Creek Recreation Department to warn people against ice skating on the pond at Henry Miller Park. The recreation department late last week posted signs about thin and dangerous ice and advised Oak Creek police to watch for people walking on it, according to the department logbook. Indeed, ice only covered about half of the pond by late Monday afternoon. Not that it stopped these brave (crazy?) Oak Creek High School students from wandering over it.

Thousands descended on Henry Miller Park Tuesday evening to remember six members of the Sikh Temple who were shot Sunday, and three who were injured, in Oak Creek.
Thousands of residents filled Henry Miller Park in Oak Creek Tuesday night for a vigil to honor those killed in Sunday's shootings at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. The evening started and ended with a traditional Sikh prayer in Punjabi, included the readings of the biographies of each of those killed and featured speeches from Gov. Scott Walker and others. The event took place at the end of Oak Creek's National Night Out, held annually to help bring the community closer together. Police and an anonymous citizen rescued 10 ducklings from a storm drain on the Noodles property and returned them to the Miller Park pond.
How's this for "Awwww"? Ten ducklings stuck in a storm drain Friday night were rescued with the help of Oak Creek police and an anonymous citizen. And while the mother duck flew away, she was reunited with her ducklings the following day. According to the police department logbook: The ducks were trapped on the Noodles and Company property, 8581 S. Howell Ave., about 8:05 p.m. The Oak Creek Street Department couldn't respond due to high traffic volume on Howell Avenue, and the Humane Society was not available due to the time of night. So an officer and an anonymous citizen went to work and eventually collected all 10 of the ducklings from the drain. However, by that time, the mother duck flew away. The ducklings were then conveyed to the …

We were so disappointed. We had looked forward to the pig roast since last year, but when we arrived at 2:15 there was no pork left. We had waited until our grandson got up from his nap and since it was advertised to go until 4:00 we thought we would be okay.   more ›
