Evers Visit Highlights Successful OCHS Programs

State Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers visited Oak Creek High School to highlight Career and Technical Education Month. He heard about the Knightro Fusion soda and the school's partnerships with Caterpillar and Wheaton Franciscan.

State Superintendent Tony Evers' tour spotlighting Career and Technical Education Month made a stop at Oak Creek High School Thursday morning. The visit gave Evers the chance to see first hand several of the school's CTE programs, as well as the students and teachers in the center of them. He also got a "taste" of a major OCHS success story—Knightro Fusion soda, the student-made and student-marketed project that has graced the shelves of Woodman's, Pick 'n Save and other local stores. The cherry-vanilla soda garnered a lot of community attention when it was released last year, and before 2012 was done, retail sales passed the 1,000 case mark. Students are now preparing to launch a second flavor, Orange Cream, at the Taste of Oak Creek on …

Sales of OCHS Student-Made Soda Hit Milestone

As sales of Knightro Fusion pass the 1,000-case mark, the school district says another soda flavor is in the works.

Retail sales of Knightro Fusion, a cherry-vanilla soda developed by Oak Creek High School students, have reached a milestone: the 1,000-case mark. Those high sales have raised a sizable amount of money that will go toward scholarships for Advanced Placement chemistry and marketing students. Since the summer, the soda has been available at stores in the Oak Creek-Franklin area including Pick 'n Save, Woodman's and Gary's Beer & Liquor. The school district says a new soda flavor is in the works and will be released at the Taste of Oak Creek in March. Knightro Fusion is the work of students in Jim Buss's advanced placement chemistry class as well as students of marketing teacher Michael Burden. The school worked with Oak Creek-based Black …

Howell Ave.; Woodman's, 8131 S. Howell Ave.; and Gary's Beer & Liquor, 9555 S. Howell Ave. The cherry-vanilla soda is the work of students in Jim Buss's advanced placement chemistry class as well as students of marketing teacher Michael Burden. The AP chem students spent six weeks mixing ingredients, conducting taste tests and adjusting the formula. When it was done, they passed it onto Burden's class, which conducted a naming contest, created a bottle label and formulated a marketing plan. The entire school voted …

PHOTOS: Taste of Oak Creek

Third annual event benefited the Oak Creek-Franklin Foundation for Education.

Local restaurants, silent auction items, cupcake wars and a student-created soda highlighted the third-annual Taste of Oak Creek Thursday. The event at the Oak Creek Community Center benefited the Oak Creek-Franklin Foundation for Education, which raised money for high school scholarships. Oak Creek restaurants such as El Fogon, Bootz Saloon and di Carlo were among the vendors serving food. And the Oak Creek High School-created cherry-vanilla soda was going fast, said teachers Michael Burden and Jim Buss, who helped lead the students' creation. The Taste of Oak Creek served as the launch party of "Knightro Fusion," a soda made by chemistry and marketing students.

Knightro Fusion will debut at the Taste of Oak Creek.

A project that spanned two school years will have its official launch party Thursday. A brand-new, cherry-flavored soda called "Knightro Fusion" will debut at the Taste of Oak Creek, set for 5 to 9 p.m. at the Oak Creek Community Center. The soda is the work of students in Jim Buss's advanced placement chemistry class, and students of marketing teacher Michael Burden.  Working with Oak Creek-based Black Bear Soda Company, the AP chem students spent six weeks mixing ingredients, conducting taste tests and adjusting the formula. When it was done, they passed it onto Burden's class, which conducted a naming contest, created a bottle label and formulated a marketing plan. The entire school voted on the soda's name.
