Westboro Baptist Church's Oak Creek Visit a Small, Quiet One

Counter-protesters outnumbered members of the controversial Kansas-based church by nearly a 4-to-1 margin Sunday at Oak Creek Assembly of God.

Six members of the Westboro Baptist Church were greeted by about 20 counter-protesters Sunday morning outside the Oak Creek Assembly of God, 7311 S. 13th St. The protest was a peaceful one, with each side quietly holding up their signs expressing their point of view. Several Oak Creek police officers lined the street to not only keep peace but direct traffic. The protest was staged just before Assembly of God's 10:30 a.m. service. At the end of the demonstration, which lasted about 20 minutes, officers escorted Westboro church members into their vehicle. The controversial Westboro Baptist Church, which has gained national notoriety for picketing military funerals, visited some of the bigger churches around the Milwaukee area Sunday, …

Westboro Protest Won't Stop Oak Creek Church's Celebration

The Oak Creek church will hold its freedom-themed musical on Sunday, the same day as a planned protest by the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.

The Oak Creek Assembly of God is not letting a planned protest by the infamous Westboro Baptist Church get in the way of its plans. The church will hold its long-planned special event, "Celebrate Freedom 2012: Let Freedom Swing," at both its 8 and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday. The musical involves the whole congregation and pays tribute to veterans, just a few days before the Fourth of July. The Westboro protest, planned to take place shortly before the 10:30 a.m. service, won't deter the celebration, said media relations director Christine Jacobs. In fact, the timing is a little ironic. "We're going to celebrate the freedom we have in our nation," Jacobs said. "Because of our freedom, they have right to express their views." Jacobs said …

I actually like the antics of the WBC. Most people are Biblically ignorant to stand up against them that's why most people don't want to talk to them in any intelligent way. The WBC is correct about a few things though. Our nation is in wars that are none of our business. The result is what they are saying. Also the churches are in apostasy. Most are social clubs that are nothing more than …   more ›

Controversial Church to Protest at Oak Creek Assembly of God

Westboro Baptist Church, a group that protests military funerals, will be in Wisconsin this weekend at area churches in metro Milwaukee.

An anti-gay church that has a reputation for picketing funerals of military members who were killed in action is coming to southeastern Wisconsin and plans to protest at area churches. Westboro Baptist Church in 2011 pledged to increase its protests after it was determined they could picket military funerals under the First Amendment. The group pickets military funerals with anti-gay messages as it believes that military deaths are God's punishment for homosexuality in the United States. The Westboro Baptist Church's website states it will be at Oak Creek Assembly of God, 7311 S. 13th St., from 10:10 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.  Other protests in the Milwaukee area on Sunday (unless otherwise indicated) include: Christine Jacobs at Oak Creek …

Five performances scheduled for this weekend.

There is no shortage of people involved in Oak Creek Assembly of God's twice-yearly productions. This weekend will be no different. More than 200 people total have given their time toward the production of Scrooge!, to be held this weekend at the church, 7311 S. 13th St. And there shouldn't be a shortage of audience members, either. Between 10,000 and 12,000 people are expected to attend one of five performances scheduled for the weekend, Pastor Greg Lathe said. Residents have an opportunity to see the musical at 7 p.m. Friday, 3:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 3:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Oak Creek Assembly of God Welcomes New Pastor

Pastor Juan M. Garay is now in charge of International Ministries for the local church.

Oak Creek Assembly of God recently added a minister to their flock. Pastor Juan M. Garay was brought in to expand and develop the church's International Ministries. Before his placement here, Pastor Juan worked as a minister at several Florida churches. Under his leadership, one church in San Antonio, Florida quadrupled in size over an eight year period. During this time he also completed his education at Southeastern University, graduating with a B.A. in Church Leadership.  Pastor Juan is no stranger to Oak Creek though. In the late 90's, he lived in the Milwaukee area and actually attended Oak Creek Assembly of God with his wife Celines. While there, he became involved with the church's music and youth programs, but his calling …
