Children's author Tim Federle will be the first in what the library hopes is a series of authors to visit Oak Creek.
The Oak Creek Public Library will host a children's author next month in what it hopes is the beginning of many author visits. Tim Federle will be at the Oak Creek Community Center April 9 at a time to be determined. Federle, a Broadway dancer, is the author of Better Nate Than Ever, in which a small-town teenager concocts a plan to run away to New York and crash an audition for E.T.: The Musical. The library hopes to host more of these types of events after it moves into a new facility next year but is trying to get an early start now, librarian Sarah Corso said. The library isn't able to host many large events with its cramped space, but often works with the community center, just across the parking lot. The April 9 event is co-sponsored…

The mining debate will likely be a focus of Monday night's meeting at the Oak Creek Public Library.
The debate over mining is likely to be a major focus of a town hall meeting Monday night hosted by State Sen. Chris Larson. The town hall will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Oak Creek Public Library, 8620 S. Howell Ave. Larson says the event will allow him to talk about issues facing the community and state and listen to the concerns of residents. In recent days, Larson has expressed his opposition to the controversial mining bill introduced by Republicans earlier this month. He said the legislation "ignores the public input heard during the bipartisan committee hearings, does not take into account the concerns raised by federal regulators, and was drafted without input from Democratic legislators." "Mining can be done …

The Oak Creek Public Library is hoping to raise between $3 million and $5 million to furnish the inside of its new building, scheduled to open in 2014.
The Oak Creek Public Library is gearing up for a fundraising campaign it hopes will raise millions of dollars toward a new facility. The library foundation and many volunteers are also preparing to speak to 100 to 200 people, through interviews, focus groups and surveys, to find out what the community is looking for in a new library and how much money could be raised, said Jodi Sweeney, president of the Sweeney Group. The Sweeney Group is a fundraising consultant assisting the library in raising money for the new building. "My job is to help the library raise as much money as possible for the interior of the library so that you have a building that the entire community is proud of — a 21st century library," Sweeney told the common council …

If the Friends of the Oak Creek Library's book sale seems bigger this year, it's because ... it is. The annual sale, held Aug. 7 during National Night Out, features many more items than previous years. So much so, in fact, the sale has been extended an extra day. The big increase in materials is because, as part of its preparations to move to a new building in 2014, the library recently weeded out old, under-used books that hadn't been checked out in years. Those books were donated to the Friends' group and will be on sale Tuesday. The sale will be held from 3-5 p.m. for Friends of the Library members — memberships can be purchased at the door — and 5-8 p.m. for non-members. The Friends group will be back selling items at the library, 8620…

Your name says "local" in it. Chris Larson's job is to represent the residents of his district, not those of northern districts, hence the whole form of representative govt. The question on mining comes up is it in the best interests of HIS constituents. If it's not, then vote no, but you can't bring up water tables, or lake superior water in defense of his vote on this.   more ›
