After the shocking Aug. 5 shootings at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, many business leaders called the Oak Creek Community Center wondering what they could do to help. The facility, after all, has long been known for its ability to coordinate large fundraisers, and "strengthening community" is directly in its mission statement. So after a few weeks passed and things started to settle, Community Center Director Rich Duchniak started contacting those businesses and organizations that reached out to him the week of the shootings. After numerous conversations, the idea of a community fundraiser was hatched. "A Community United," a benefit to support the Oak Creek Sikh temple and injured police officer Brian Murphy, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m…

It wasn't exactly a natural next step when Rich Duchniak left the bar business in 1999 to take over as director of the Oak Creek Community Center. But nearly 13 years later, Duchniak is still at the helm of the community center, presiding over a time in which the facility has increased its number of community service offerings and grown to the point that 125,000 people pass through the doors each year. The spirit of community service is evident in its mission -- to improve lives, strengthen community and foster civic engagement -- and in practice. Events added over Duchniak's tenure include the community tree-lighting, a Thanksgiving dinner for those in need and the summer concert series. For his efforts, Duchniak has been named this year'…

The Oak Creek Community Center played host to two Breakfast with Santa events.
The sounds of Jingle Bells and Banana Phone rang through the Oak Creek Community Center Dec. 18 as Santa Claus came to town. He was invited by Rich Duchniak, the executive director of the community center, to have breakfast with residents and hear kids' last-minute Christmas wishes of video games and classic toys. Duchniak coordinated a whole event for Mr. Claus' visit. A large tree stood tall in the center of the lobby and behind that was a small room where Santa awaited his visitors. In a connecting dining room, people congregated to listen to the live music and enjoy the food. This is the 10th year Santa made this stop in Oak Creek. Five years ago, the program expanded to two weekend visits because the event sold out so quickly. This …

'Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and for the sixth year, the Oak Creek Community Center opened its doors for a free Thanksgiving meal. About 500 were expected to attend the "Evening of Blessings” event held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Local faith-based organizations and students from Oak Creek schools combined to provide close to 75 volunteers for the event, Community Center Executive Director Rich Duchniak said. Financial support from several Oak Creek area businesses covered the dinner expense. Duchniak said organizers targeted the dinner largely toward seniors and those living in government-subsidized housing, but anyone with an appetite was welcome.
