Deer hunters and holiday travelers will encounter fewer orange barrels on major highways.
From the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Although most major road construction projects have concluded for the year, drivers traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday may encounter some ongoing work and should be prepared for orange barrels, lane shifts, and reduced speeds. "Because of the extraordinary road construction season this year, we’ve been able to wrap up the majority of projects before Thanksgiving," said Don Greuel of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Project Services Section. "There no longer are detours on major highways for construction projects, but there are a few spots where lane restrictions are still in place." WisDOT expects traffic to be heavy on Friday, November 16, as deer hunters flock to…

The state Department of Transportation plans to rehabilitate 13 bridges between the Marquette Interchange and Howard Avenue.
A public meeting will be held Tuesday regarding the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's plans to rehabilitate 13 bridges on Interstate 94 next year. The open house-style meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. at the United Community Center, 1028 S. 9th St., Milwaukee. Residents can learn more about the project, view exhibits, provide comments and talk with staff members representing the DOT. The DOT plans to rehabilitate 13 bridges between the Marquette Interchange and Howard Avenue starting in the spring of 2013, further impacting the commute for residents traveling to and from downtown. The work will include bridge deck overlays or replacements, bridge repair and painting, according to the DOT's website. Plans call for one lane to be…

Major work planned on Pennsylvania and Drexel avenues.
With one major project already under way, the Oak Creek Common Council has finalized the rest of the road work that will take place in 2012. The biggest projects in the city this year are the widening of Drexel and Pennsylvania avenues. Work on Drexel, which is now closed west of 13th Street, began Feb. 13. Drexel between 27th Street and Interstate 94 will transform from a two-lane rural road to a four-lane divided boulevard, with on-street bicycle accommodations, street lighting, additional turn lanes at 27th Street and stoplight modifications. It will connect with the new Drexel Interchange, which is scheduled to get under construction in May. Officials say it's one of the largest road projects Oak Creek has ever undertaken. The cost of…

Traffic could be busiest on Sunday, as gun deer season comes to a close.
A few significant road construction projects present the promise of slower traffic over the busy Thanksgiving weekend. Be prepared in order to make the best of it. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, here are some of the more significant projects that could impact the trip to grandma’s house: Those who are staying in Milwaukee in order to bring Black Friday to its knees should note these two sticky spots: Weather should not slow you much, as highs are expected mostly in the 50s in southeastern Wisconsin, with chances of just light rain. More challenging could be the expected heavy traffic on Sunday, when the gun deer season also wraps up and hunters are on their way home. Highways should be slightly more congested this…

But traffic will still be heavy all over the state. Thursday will be a particularly busy day with home games for the Brewers, Badgers and Packers.
Workers will take a break from construction on most highway projects around the state this Labor Day weekend, but motorists may still encounter lane restrictions in work zones that require extra precautions, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. WisDOT announced today in a news release that most major highway construction and repair work will cease around noon Friday and will not resume until 6 a.m. Tuesday. "However, because of the increased holiday traffic, driving through work zones will be even more challenging," said Don Greuel of the WisDOT's Project Service Section. "Drivers will need to slow down, pay attention and avoid following other vehicles too closely when approaching and traveling through work zones." …

Construction scheduled to begin next spring.
Oak Creek is preparing for the reconstruction of Pennsylvania Avenue, between Rawson to College avenues, set to begin in the spring of 2012. By the time it's finished next fall, the road will be widened to four lanes, include accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians and feature improved street lighting. In the meantime, the city will begin negotiating with property owners to acquire small portions of 13 parcels along Pennsylvania for right-of-way and easement purposes. The Common Council on Tuesday night authorized the city to begin those negotiations. Alderman Dan Jakubczyk, whose district includes that section of Pennsylvania, said some residents are leery about the prospect of reconstruction, particularly its impact on their taxes…

Business owners impacted by the work hope it pays off in the end.
The road construction under way on 13th Street is widely thought to be needed, though that hasn't made the experience for residents and business owners any more pleasant. The project between Rawson and College avenues, led by Milwaukee-based LaLonde Contractors, includes storm sewer, electrical, box culvert, road base and concrete paving. Crews are now working on the east side of the street, with traffic reduced to one lane each way. Work is expected to wrap up by mid-summer. Business owners hope the improvements are worth the hassle. Linda Swenson, co-owner of Oak Creek Diner, said the construction has made it difficult for customers to enter and leave the restaurant's parking lot, and she wishes she had more business from construction …

20th Street is the biggest item on the list.
The Common Council tonight may vote to authorize about $780,000 worth of road projects for 2011. Most on the list, which can be found here, are relatively small and less than 1,000 feet in length. But, certainly, they are not small to residents who live in those neighborhoods. The biggest on the list is a portion of 20th Street between Rawson and College avenues. It would be resurfaced with asphalt, under the city's plans. The list includes only local streets and not construction taking place on state highways or county roads. The recommendations come from the engineering department, which recently conducted its annual city-wide inspection and rated the condition of each street. The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 8640 …
