Oak Creek manufacturer Nucor Cold Finish got the nod as the South Suburban Chamber's Business of the Year during the organization's annual dinner Wednesday night. Nucor, which manufacturers steel bars, is the largest cold finish producer and the largest recycler of steel in North America. The company has also been a supportive and generous corporate citizen in the South Suburban area and an active member of the chamber, said Barbara Wesener, the executive director of the South Suburban Chamber. Gov. Scott Walker took his message to the Oak Creek-Franklin area Wednesday night, laying out his priorities to about 220 members of the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce. The governor keyed on economic development during his 30-minute speech at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 6401 S. 13th St., where he also delivered high praise for the Oak Creek-Franklin area. "Oak Creek and Franklin are where it's happening—not just in Milwaukee County, but all across the state," he said to loud applause. Three finalists will be honored at the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce annual dinner Wednesday.
The South Suburban Chamber of Commerce will honor three local businesses as this year's Business of the Year finalists. ESC Services of Franklin, Nucor Cold Finish of Oak Creek and Precision Color Graphics of Franklin will be honored at the chamber's annual dinner Wednesday. In addition, Dental Associates, Gus' Mexican Cantina and Staybridge Suites Milwaukee Airport South are finalists for the Pride in Premises award, given to companies and organizations that demonstrate great care for their physical environment. The Richard R. Bolender Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to business major.
The South Suburban Chamber of Commerce has renamed one of its scholarships after the late Oak Creek Mayor Dick Bolender. The South Suburban Chamber Richard R. Bolender Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an Oak Creek High School graduating senior who plans to major in business. The chamber's board of directors renamed the scholarship in recognition of Bolender's contributions to the present, but especially the future, of Oak Creek, Chamber Executive Director Barbara Wesener said. The Gateway to Milwaukee takes home Pride in Premises honors.
The South Suburban Chamber of Commerce has named The Starr Group the winner of its 2011 Business of the Year award. The Starr Group, an insurance/risk management agency, was founded in 1956 by Robert Starr and is now under the leadership of Mary and Tim Starr. Though it's based in Greenfield, the business has been active in the South Suburban Chamber and many other south-shore organizations, according to an Oak Creek Common Council resolution. Runners-up for the award were Cousins Subs, on 76th Street and Rawson Avenue in Franklin and 23rd Street and Ryan Road in Oak Creek, and Precision Color Graphics, 9640 S. “Edgy” is not normally a term associated with a guy who talks about water. Rich Meeusen, however, is not a normal guy. In between wise cracks about his wife, college sex and philosophy majors, Meeusen eloquently presented the case for how Milwaukee can become a global water hub and the dire water crisis facing the world at a lunch gathering Thursday at Wheaton Franciscan. The South Suburban Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 10th anniversary Thursday with a reception at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital, 10101 S. 27th St. The business appreciation event included city updates from Mayors Dick Bolender of Oak Creek and Tom Taylor of Franklin. State legislators presented chamber Executive Director Barbara Wesener with a plaque commemorating 10 years. The organization, formerly called the Southeastern Chamber United in Business, combined the Oak Creek and Franklin chambers of commerce in 2001.
