The ambitious plans for the corner of Drexel and Howell continue to move ahead, with work under way at the site now and a public hearing coming up in June.
Progress on Oak Creek's much-publicized Drexel Town Square development comes in both visible and invisible ways. Visible work is happening now at the corner of Drexel and Howell avenues, where several trucks and workers are digging up concrete at the 85-acre site. That work will continue until the end of July, and the concrete will be re-used within the development. The invisible: the Drexel Town Square site plan has begun moving through the city government review process, with a public hearing set for June 18 and a final Oak Creek Common Council vote sometime soon after that. "Given the complexities of the commercial real estate market, the financing market and everything else that's been going on since the crash of 2008, I feel we're …

Mayor Steve Scaffidi answered dozens of questions in the inaugural State of the City event April 24.
We tackled a lot of topics in Wednesday night's State of the City with Mayor Steve Scaffidi, who got an unofficial total of 41 questions from the 50 or so people in the audience, those following our live blog and Patch users who submitted questions ahead of time. Unsurprisingly, the Drexel Town Square development was the top issue on residents' minds, and not just the details of the project itself: the event also showed a great concern about how the development will impact traffic. Most of the traffic issues—like the placement of new stoplights on Howell and Drexel avenues, right and left turns onto Howell and other alterations—will be worked out over time, Scaffidi said. One thing that is known, however, is that 6th Street will go …

Yes, the mayor did have an answer for every question asked. Specifics were lacking in answers. He said were on plan G which was not finalized and is subject to change. He hoped a final plan would be in place by June. He said he'd like to see 6 or 7 restaurants on the site. 6 or 7? Site couldn't support 6 or 7 restaurants no matter how many residents want. Lisa, out of town developer's are not …   more ›

Vocal-Ok yes I would have to agree with u in this case. I also support the look thru of the current law. As it most def should be redeifined as to types of felonys, as there are many who were convicted of non violent crimes, drug crimes ect. Although I also feel that if an individual has been convicted of a felony they obviously made some really bad choices in life!! There MUST be consequences …   more ›
The city is re-branding itself as it embarks on several major development projects and continues to transform.
The way Oak Creek city leaders see it, the community is heading into a new era. As it embarks on major development projects at the former Delphi site, lakefront and Oakwood Road, the city has released a new logo as part of a major re-branding of the community. It's the first logo change in more than 20 years and will slowly begin showing up on street signage, welcome signs, business cards and all other city-branded materials. And the logo is just the start. Over the coming weeks and months, the city will unveil a new website, a "My Oak Creek" YouTube series and a social media campaign called "Around the Town with Mayor Steve." "Our goal is to convey a real sense of the strong, growing community we have in Oak Creek," Mayor Steve Scaffidi …

I could have made the same logo and it wouldn't have cost Oak Creek anywhere near $300,000. What a WASTE of the taxpayers money. Also, one thing you never hear about is what stores are lined up for the Drexel Town Square outside of that DREADFUL Meijers, and Brick 3 Pizza. Any news on them bringing in something not already found in Oak Creek, Whitefish Bay, Brookfield, or elsewhere? Oak Creek 's …   more ›
Just before the U.S. Senate voted down an expansion of background checks, Steve Scaffidi and three other U.S. mayors talked with Vice President Joe Biden about gun reforms.
Just before he presided over a U.S. Senate vote in which expanded background checks were defeated, Vice President Joe Biden joined Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi and three other mayors on a virtual conference call to discuss that and other aspects of the nationwide gun debate. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak moderated the 30-minute Google Hangout discussion, which also featured Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Gary (Ind.) Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. Scaffidi, himself a gun owner and self-described Republican, said he knows his position supporting gun reforms isn't popular. But he pledged to get involved at the request of Sikh temple shooting victims. "I come from a gun-owning state. Lots of law-abiding citizens. They worry their …

Now if you take the time to read the website and specifically the Coalition Principles you will see that the Mayor also supports the banning of Military style weapons!! Hmmmmm now lets see, I do not believe that we as gun owners own a military style weapon. I know for a fact that I own a semi automatic …   more ›

Were in deep trouble financially. Today the bottom fell out of municipal bonds the city planned on using to finance the millions of dollar revolving door debt funding plans. Both Mutual funds including muni bonds and plain municipal bonds are determined to be in failure which is expected to increase bond interest rates which are not figured into the city and Wis Parks debt funding of capital …   more ›
Mayor Steve Scaffidi testified Wednesday in support of a state Assembly bill that would restructure Milwaukee County government.
Mayor Steve Scaffidi spoke in favor of a proposed bill to reform Milwaukee County government during several hours of testimony in Madison Wednesday. Scaffidi lent his support to the bill, which would empower the county executive and marginalize county supervisors' roles in many areas of Milwaukee County affairs. A referendum would also be held next year on slashing county supervisors' pay from $50,679 to $24,000. Considering the amount of property tax money that goes to the county, the current government structure has not worked for Oak Creek residents, Scaffidi said "Talking to our residents, they overwhelmingly support something getting done," Scaffidi said. "They don't feel we're getting our money's worth for what's coming back." …

I'd take it a step further and make Milwaukee County and the City of Milwaukee ONE government like in Indianapolis and Nashville. Think of the savings on public services that are currently duplicated by have separate city, town and county governments. Both cities are much more advanced in their development. But restructuring the county board is a step in the right direction.   more ›

Mayor Steve Scaffidi last week issued a city proclamation to Trattoria di Carlo in honor of the restaurant's charitable contributions and 10th anniversary. In particular, Scaffidi recognized the restaurant and its owner, Carlo Pedone, for donating food for a Feb. 23 fundraiser for Haley Rae Cabreza, whose family is facing a large amount of medical expenses. The event at the Salvation Army raised nearly $15,000. Di Carlo celebrated its 10th anniversary in December.
