Honadel Honored by Re-Election, Looks Ahead

State Rep. Mark Honadel got 60 percent of the vote against Democratic challenger Bill Kurtz in winning re-election to the 21st Assembly District seat.

State Rep. Mark Honadel said he was honored to be elected to another term in the Assembly and looked forward to getting back to work in the state Legislature. Honadel got 60 percent of the vote Tuesday against Democratic challenger Bill Kurtz in the race for the 21st Assembly district, which includes Oak Creek, South Milwaukee and a small portion of Franklin. Kurtz, 60, is a former reporter who has also worked for several colleges. He was in his first run for public office. It will be Honadel's fifth full term in the Assembly after winning a special election in 2003. "As long you enjoy this job and want to get something done, it's an honor. No doubt about it," Honadel said Wednesday. "I never take this for granted, being in politics." The …

Amen to your comment on lack of newspaper coverage. The Journal Sentinel did not cover individual legislative races this year, a severe handicap for someone like myself, a first-time candidate with limited resources. Unlike your assembly race, there were no candidate forums. I did a 10-minute interview on Wisconsin Eye, which my opponent ducked. As an incumbent with a prominent local name, he …   more ›

Honadel, Kurtz Square Off In Assembly Race

Nine-year incumbent Honadel faces political newcomer Kurtz in race for the 21st Assembly district.

In one corner, you have the Republican incumbent, a nine-year veteran of the Wisconsin Legislature who won his last re-election bid with 69 percent of the vote. In the other, you have the Democratic challenger, a man in his first run for public office who spent years covering local politics as a journalist. State Rep. Mark Honadel and challenger Bill Kurtz will square off Tuesday in the 21st District Assembly race. The district includes Oak Creek, South Milwaukee and a small part of Franklin. In interviews with Oak Creek Patch, Honadel touted his record of working with both parties to pass meaningful legislation, while Kurtz criticized the incumbent's support of Gov. Scott Walker's agenda. Get complete info on where to vote and who's on …

Even though I strongly disagree with Mr Kurtz's liberal views, I applaud him for just getting out there and running for the office to give Mr Honadel some competition. I would not vote for anyone with Mr Kurtz's views, since I see little logic or facts behind them, but I also commend him for doing a WisconsinEye interview (as I also did in my run for Congress). Too bad Mr Honadel refused that …   more ›

Election Preview: Wisconsin 21st State Assembly District

Republican incumbent Mark Honadel is opposed by veteran journalist Bill Kurtz.

Republican incumbent Mark Honadel, who has held the 21st Assembly District seat since 2003, is facing a challenge from Democrat Bill Kurtz in the Nov. 6 election. Honadel, 56, of South Milwaukee, is an independent businessman, who is also a former professional metal fabricator, welding instructor, and industrial manager. Kurtz, 60, also of South Milwaukee, has worked as a reporter for CNI Newspapers, the Shepherd Express, Catholic Herald and Milwaukee Journal. He has also worked for several colleges. The 21st District seat has new boundaries this year in the wake of redistricting prompted by population shifts in the 2010 census.
