He's not going to be vice president, but the congressman from Janesville came out the clear winner in his re-election bid for U.S. House.
Despite a solid effort and backing from local Democratic parties, challenger Rob Zerban fell short Tuesday in his effort to unseat U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan in the race for the 1st Congressional District. It was pretty crowded at the UAW hall in Kenosha by 9 p.m., where local Democrats, including Zerban and 22nd Distric State Senator Bob Wirch, were awaiting results. The crowd cheered every time another Democrat was shown as a projected winner on the screens tuned to political coverage, but when it came down to it, the Ryan campaign machine proved too much. According to our media partners at Fox 6 News, at 9:46 p.m. Ryan was up by a nearly 2-to-1 margin; 62 to 36 percent, with 20 percent of precincts reporting. At about 10 p.m., the Associated …

During campaign stop with singer Katy Perry in Milwaukee Saturday that drew an estimated 20,000 people, Obama says: "I am here today because there is more work to do."
With just days to go before what will likely be a close election both in Wisconsin and nationally, thousands of people filled the Delta Center in Milwaukee Saturday afternoon to hear President Barack Obama promise to keep fighting for the middle class. As soon as he took the podium before a crowd estimated at 20,000, Obama promised to get help to the victims of Hurricane Sandy and asked those in attendance to pray and donate to the Red Cross, if they were able to do so. His speech then turned to his campaign theme of “Forward." His primary message was about continuing the policies of his administration to provide a voice for the middle class while also growing and supporting a strong middle class. Paul Ryan visited Memorial Hall in Racine Wednesday as part of a GOP victory rally tour.
Vice presidential candidate and 1st District congressman Paul Ryan visited Memorial Hall in Racine Wednesday to boost the energy and momentum of local conservatives. Before he took the stage, big-name Republicans said a few words outlining why they think the country needs Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to win the White House on Nove. 6. And like at past rallies - including the Rally for Jobs hosted by the Racine Tea Party on Saturday - residents were encouraged to vote early absentee so that on election day, they can help ferry voters to the polls. Leaders also took a page traditionally in the Democrats' wheelhouse by telling supporters to make phone calls, knock on doors, and talk to everyone they come in contact with about why the Romney-Ryan…

Marquette University released the last poll results before the Nov. 6 election on Wednesday.
The race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney appears to be shifting once again, according to a new Marquette University poll. Obama leads Romney by eight points in the latest poll results, 51 percent to 43 percent in the state. Two weeks ago, the race was declared a dead heat with Obama garnering 49 percent of respondents' votes to Romney's 48 percent. This poll was conducted after all presidential debates were held, and Professor Charles Franklin, director of the polling project, said the polls reflect how well voters feel their candidate performed. Among most interested likely voters, Obama still retains the lead, albeit a much smaller one with 48 points to Romney's 46 percent. When it comes to the US Senate …

Thursday's Patch/WGTD debate for the 1st Congressional District is cancelled.
The Patch/WGTD Radio Oct. 25 debate featuring the candidates for the 1st Congressional District is off. Patch sent an email to Rep. Paul Ryan, Democrat Rob Zerban and Libertarian Keith Deschler this morning letting them know the debate is cancelled. After an originally tentative date of Oct. 11, we had to issue a new invitation for Oct. 25 after Ryan was chosen as Republican Mitt Romney's running mate. Ryan debated Vice President Joe Biden on Oct. 11. Kevin Seifert, Ryan's congressional campaign manager, wrote to Patch and asked us to consider alternatives if Ryan was unable to participate in person because of his schedule as the vice presidential candidate. “I would be glad to discuss any alternatives so voters can hear where Congressman …

Bristol and 1st District resident John Milligan says Rep. Paul Ryan's challenger is telling lies in his television ad.

The first TV commercial being run by Rob Zerban, Paul Ryan’s Congressional opponent, is both misleading and deceptive. Zerban shows his blatant partisanship by inaccurately claiming that Congressman Ryan's budget “ends Medicare.” Politifact has labeled this fallacy their "Lie of the Year in 2011" and Politifact Wisconsin has declared his ad’s claim as a PANTS ON FIRE lie. We deserve better than these tired tactics. The truth is that Obamacare “ends Medicare as we know it” by taking $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for Obamacare. Medicare is going bankrupt in a little over a decade, and Paul Ryan’s budget proposes no changes for individuals age 55 and over with respect to Medicare. It gives future seniors the option of staying in …

Congressman Paul Ryan is proudly pro-life. Congressman Ryan doesn’t separate his public life from his private life, which includes his Catholic faith. He also said that pro-life position is based not only on his Faith but on science, which shows that the unborn fetus is indeed a human being. In the Vice-Presidential debate, Ryan explained, “My faith informs me on how to take care of the vulnerable and how to make sure people have a chance in life.” While Ryan has said that he respects those who disagree with his pro-life position, under a Romney-Ryan administration pro-life policies would be put into place — with the exceptions of rape, incest and if the life of the mother is in danger. Democrats say that this pro-life policy will deny …
Marquette University Law School's newest poll puts the presidential race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney and Wisconsin's U.S. Senate race as too close to call.
The presidential race is a dead heat in Wisconsin, according to a Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday. President Barack Obama has 49 percent of the support of likely voters polled, while Republican Mitt Romney has 48 percent. "The candidates are separated by fractions of percentages," noted Professor Charles Franklin, who oversees the poll for the university. The first presidential debate had a signficant impact on the respondants, he added. Just two weeks ago, Obama led Romney by 14 points; 54 to 40 percent, but among those who watched the first debate, Romney took the lead by two points, 50 to 48. Obama retains a wide margin by those who did not watch the debate, 50 to 42 percent. "Rarely has a debate produced such a …

Democrat uses his first television ad to underscore Ryan's plan for Medicare and Zerban's pledge to leave the program alone.
**Updated 2 p.m. Oct 7 to include a response from the Ryan campaign The first television ad for Democrat Rob Zerban hit the airwaves Saturday— timed to coincide with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's visit to Milwaukee for a fundraiser. In the ad, Zerban points out that the Republican congressman "ends Medicare," slashes money for education, and helps out the wealthiest Americans with more tax breaks. Zerban and Ryan will square off Nov. 6 in the 1st Congressional District race. According to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Ryan campaign responded to the ad by saying Zerban's statements are lies. "Congressman Ryan has led with solutions equal to the fiscal and economic challenges we face, and it's a disservice to 1st Congressional District voters …
