Murphy Discusses His Role In Gun Violence Debate

Lt. Brian Murphy, shot 12 times during the Sikh temple attack, talked to Mike Gousha about attending the State of the Union and whether he was happy about how he was portrayed.

Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy was nervous about how he would be portrayed during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, but he said in an interview with WISN it turned out to be "what I had hoped for." Murphy appeared Sunday morning on UpFront with Mike Gousha, just days after he sat in the First Lady's box during the State of the Union and was singled out by Obama for his bravery responding to the Sikh temple shooting. Murphy told Gousha many people said he would be used as a "pawn" as Obama pushes a comprehensive package of gun reform proposals. But he wasn't as convinced, and in fact, gets upset at the suggestion. "People who have portrayed me as a pawn miss the point," Murphy said. "When the President of the United …

Murphy Honored in State of the Union

President Barack Obama noted Lt. Brian Murphy's bravery in responding to the Sikh temple shooting and surviving 12 bullets.

President Barack Obama singled out Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy in his State of the Union address Tuesday, honoring his bravery in responding to the Aug. 5 Sikh temple shooting. "We should follow the example of a police officer named Brian Murphy," Obama said. "When a gunman opened fire on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, Brian was the first to arrive and he did not consider his own safety. He fought back until help arrived and ordered his fellow officers to protect the safety of the fellow Americans worshiping inside, even as he lay bleeding from 12 bullet wounds. "And when asked how he did that, Brian said, 'That's just the way we're made.'" Obama's remarks came at the tail end of the speech as he pushed for gun reform measures. Murphy, …

I have to admit, I got choked up when Lt. Murphy was mentioned, and VERY proud to see him sitting in the galley during the speech. Regardless of what side of the aisle you sit on, Lt. Murphy made all of us proud to be from Oak Creek!   more ›

Lt. Murphy To Attend State Of The Union Speech

Lt. Brian Murphy, the Oak Creek police officer shot 12 times during the Sikh Temple shooting, was invited by Michelle Obama to attend the State of The Union Address.

Lt. Brian Murphy, the Oak Creek police officer shot during the mass shooting at the Sikh temple in August, will flank Michelle Obama during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday.  Murphy told Patch's new media partners at WISN-TV that he and his wife almost turned down the trip, but now that it's happening, it feels like a dream. "With my background, you wouldn't think in a million years, yeah, when I'm 50 I'm gonna go see the White House and sit in a box and all those things. That just don't happen," Murphy said. During his speech, Obama is expected to focus on the need for tighter restrictions on guns, according to Whitehouse.gov.  Murphy said he understands the political aspect given the nationwide debate over …

“Patriot” your something of idiot, aren’t you. The Russians are not invading. We do not live under the yoke a tyrannical despotic government in need of a violent revolution. And you most certainly do not need a military grade semi-automatic, high-capacity, assault rifle-replete with tactical scope and pistol-grip, to take Bambi down. I suggest you visit a library (it’s the building containing …   more ›

President Gives Master Lock Shout Out In SOTU

Oak Creek-based company named in Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday.

Did you catch the Master Lock mention in President Obama's State of the Union speech last night? The president referenced Master Lock, which has its administrative offices in Oak Creek, when discussing the importance of keeping jobs in the United States. "We can't bring back every job that's left our shores. But right now, it's getting more expensive to do business in places like China," Obama said. "Meanwhile, America is more productive. A few weeks ago, the CEO of Master Lock told me that it now makes business sense for him to bring jobs back home. Today, for the first time in fifteen years, Master Lock's unionized plant in Milwaukee is running at full capacity." The company's chief executive, John Heppner, took part in a forum on "…
