ReplyLet's be honest here. People driving between .05 and .08 ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. How often do you hear about a serious accident caused by someone in that range? Or even under .15? The vast majority of people driving in those ranges get home or wherever without incident. It may be less optimal than a sober, undistracted driver, but how many people drive perfectly undistracted?

ReplyDid you see Beck's has signs up asking people to sign a petition to oppose Kwik Trip?
I think I'm done buying my gas there.

ReplyWHO CARES what the other gas station owners think? They are about the worst source for objective information you could possibly imagine. Even the company applying has less reason to make wild claims, as their claims will face actual scrutiny.
Everything Beck and Alioto are saying applying just as much - perhaps even more so - to Beck's. How would Beck like it people started looking into all the worst case scenarios for his business and tried to shut him down?

ReplyAs much as I love German, there is less and less reason to teach it. Spanish is a much smarter alternative - I can't count the number of job postings I see that require or prefer Spanish-speaking applicants. Mandarin would probably be the second smartest language to be teaching, as China is rapidly on its way to becoming the world's largest economy.

There are definitely certain sectors that use tablets more, but the overall balance heavily favors laptops/desktops. I don't think it likely at all that that balance will drastically shift anytime in the foreseeable future. I'd start all students on a laptop and make tablets an option in the later grades.
I also wouldn't use iPads. You overpay for the Apple label, and can get more power and more flexibility from an Android device at a lower price.

ReplyVery simple.
When a voucher school really sucks, it gets shut down. When a public school really sucks, it stays open.
Which system makes more sense?

ReplyI'm keeping an open mind, and I'll reserve judgment until I see what my son, who is about to enter fifth grade, does with them. Obviously they should have strong filters both on the kinds of apps that can be installed and what internet sites can be visited.
I do think that using iPads is a mistake, though. I still don't see tablets as major productivity tools, at least compared to computers. I know very, very few people who use a tablet more at work than a desktop or laptop.

ReplyEconomic protectionism at its worst. Government has no business protecting incumbent businesses from competition.

News anchors will love it, because they'll get to start saying things like "FIVE times the legal limit" instead of "three times the legal limits" for .25.
